Central Wyoming College is a two-year open door public comprehensive community college officially established in 1966. As early as the 1950's, community leaders recognized the need for a college to lift the predominantly agricultural and mining community educationally and culturally. The college serves about 2200 students within a service area that has more than 15,000 square miles and approximately 60,000 people in three counties. The main campus is located in Riverton, (Fremont County) Wyoming, a rural community with a population of 10,000. The college has outreach centers in LanderDubois and Jackson, and provides services in Thermopolis and on the Wind River Indian Reservation


The college has earned the reputation of being a high quality institution where new and innovative programs are developed to best serve CWC students and the community at large. The college has secured several major federal grants to create a variety of workforce development programs as well as pre-college programs. CWC's dual and concurrent enrollment programs, where high school juniors and seniors in the three-county service area get a jump-start on their college education is the envy of all the colleges in Wyoming.


The main campus is adjacent to the exterior boundaries of the Wind River Reservation, home to the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes. CWC has the highest percentage of minority students of any community college in Wyoming and has been recognized by Community College Week as one of the "top 100 associate degree producers of American Indian students." Serving the educational needs of this diverse community has always meant fostering multicultural awareness and appreciation. CWC opened the Intertribal Education and Community Center in 2010 after a decade of fundraising and 40 years of planning. It is a highly visible landmark celebrating the cultural diversity and historical significance of the area. The building houses faculty teaching American Indian Studies, Western American Studies, a collection of American Indian artifacts, an elder's room, a collection of historical photographs from the reservation, and the work of tribal artists.


Recently the college received a grant to educate students in urgently needed health care professions which coincided with the completion of the new Health and Science Center that opened in the fall of 2013. The college completed its remodel of the Classroom Wing and Professional-Technical Center in 2013. CWC has broken ground on a new Lander 

Center and opened a residence facility at its Sinks Canyon Center this past fall. The college's Robert A. Peck Arts Center is one of the finest visual and performing arts centers in the area, and CWC is home to the state's only public broadcasting station, Wyoming PBS.


The college staff is inspired by its mission and its clearly articulated strategic priorities, developed by scanning for changes in the communities CWC serves to address emerging needs and market demands. The current Strategic Plan and Annual Report can be found on the college website.

About Our Local Community

Riverton, home to Central Wyoming College's main campus, is a vibrant community located between the Wind River Mountain Range and the Owl Creek Mountain Range. Nearly 10,000 residents call Riverton home and it has become the hub of commerce for central Wyoming with both locally owned businesses and major chain stores.  Rich in Wyoming history and bordering the Wind River Reservation, this city, along with the surrounding area, is frequently referred to as "Wind River Country" with diverse opportunities for outdoor recreation, an excellent K-12 school system, and warm and welcoming residents. Lander, just a short drive south (23 miles), is a community of approximately 7,000 with a small town feel and home to many outdoor enthusiasts. Within minutes you can hike, bike, fish or enjoy a peaceful drive into the Wind River Mountains. Many current Central Wyoming College faculty and staff enjoy the daily commute from our neighboring city with its small-town feel. Both cities are rich with history and have managed to preserve their cultural beginnings while progressively providing opportunity, education and growth to their residents. The Wind River Reservation, which lies between the two communities,  offers cultural experiences in Native American history, art, and music from the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes.

About Wyoming

From larger-than-life political figures like Al Simpson and Dick Cheney, to the humble cattle rancher and retail store owner, Wyoming's greatest asset, as a participant in a  recent listening survey conducted by Wyoming PBS noted, "The people are Wyoming's chief asset. What sets Wyoming apart is that its citizens are very independent and proud. They work very hard for their state."

Reporting to the college president, the Vice President for Academic Affairs works with the Cabinet to provide strategic direction and operational oversight of the Academic Affairs of the College, to serve as the Chief Academic Officer and to direct continuous improvement efforts in student learning and outcomes.


The new Vice President must be able to:

  • Guide the college's comprehensive academic teaching and learning activities and initiatives including curriculum and program planning and development, long and mid-term planning to meet the local workforce needs, alignment of academic programs with K-12 and university entities; assessment of program efficiencies and effectiveness;
  • In partnership with the Cabinet, establish and inspire a unified direction for the Academic Affairs of the college through a data-driven strategic planning process;
  • Foster an engaging and supportive teaching and learning environment that promotes collaborative culture focused on achieving key results aligned with the college's strategic priorities, mission and vision;
  • Strengthen relationships and collaborative efforts with local Native American communities;
  • Model superb interpersonal skills, respect for the contributions of all staff, and a collaborative leadership style resulting in a positive campus climate; and
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with business, government agencies, high schools, other community colleges, and universities to facilitate the planning and delivery of academic affairs.

The successful candidate for the Vice President of Academic Affairs position will:

  • Possess superb knowledge and skills related to resource management, both fiscal and human;

Required Qualifications

Masters degree in educational administration, community college leadership or other related discipline  from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Five (5) years of progressively responsible, successful management, supervisory administrative and budgetary experience at the division chair, associate dean level or above in a community college or other higher education institution is required.  A doctorate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is preferred.
